Another superb, albeit very intensive trip in search of the endemic and iconic birds of the 'Fortunate Islands', including the two most wanted seabirds after I'd departed!

Brown Bears, birds & butterflies in the Alto Sil & Somiedo N.P. : Trip Report August 2014 John Muddeman

A strongly reworked, much less intensive and highly successful version of the previous tour. At a gentler pace we made just one bear watch a day, all but one of these at dawn, resulting in a remarkable final tally of 11 different Brown Bears! A wealth of other sightings included Wild Cat, Southern Chamois, Alpine Accentor and 57 species of butterflies, such as the endemic Chapman's Ringlet.

On many a birder's wish list, the Canary Islands are a superb destination. Its combination of endemic bird and other species, plus excellent opportunities of seeing pelagic species from onboard large and stable vessels, this logistically complex trip combining visits to four islands ran even better than hoped!

Nearly a year after visiting the area too late in mid-July, a brief stop in the W Gredos mountains en route to a weekend away looking for dragonflies in the Hurdes mountains came up trumps.

A short walk at a new spot in a favourite area of mine, three years after finding Bladder Senna, the larval food plant, paid off with the discovery of a small colony of this very scarce and rather enigmatic species.
